Chapter 25 A Small Underground Shelter
Chapter 25 A Small Underground Shelter
Drop drop!
Drop drop!
The sudden sound rang out in the originally quiet stairwell, startling Lao Bai and the others.
The VMs of the five-person team simultaneously emitted piercing alarms, and their screens flashed bright red lights.
Ye Shi raised his arm and brought the VM close to his eyes, the flashing red light on the screen making his face appear and disappear.
After manipulating the screen for a while, he turned off the alarm and read aloud what was displayed: "Radiation levels exceed the safe threshold? What does that mean?"
At this moment, the others also turned off the alarm, and the stairwell became quiet again.
Kuangfeng glanced down and said, "What I mean is, there's a radioactive source under this department store."
Upon hearing this, Fang Chang said thoughtfully, "According to the game's background, it might be nuclear fuel rods?"
The group chatted amongst themselves, but in the end they all looked at Li Yuan, clearly indicating that they wanted him to make the decision.
Li Yuan thought for a moment and said, "Let's clear out the monsters first. Clean up the entire underground area, and then I'll go see what's going on."
The excessive radiation underground will continue to harm the human body, so it is naturally most appropriate for someone with his constitution to explore it.
Old Bai nodded: "That's the plan! I have a feeling we'll find something good this time."
The group entered the underground parking lot. Li Yuan, wielding a long-handled battle axe, took the lead, while the others either assisted with knives or drew their bows and shot arrows from behind. They advanced slowly, not letting any of the alien species escape.
One, two, three...
It turns out that gnats do indeed prefer to stay in dark places.
The number of alien species in the underground parking lot is almost three times that of the first floor of the department store!
"Kill! Kill! Kill!"
Li Yuan wielded his battle axe, becoming more and more excited and fluid with each kill, feeling as if all the muscles and bones in his body were stretched out.
Finally, he beheaded one crawler with a "Sweeping Strike" and split another crawler in two with a "Mountain Cleave" strike, thus ending the battle.
The group of five inspected the underground parking lot twice to make sure it was completely cleared out and there were no more alien creatures left, before sitting down around a thick concrete pillar.
"Finally cleared them all out, they shouldn't spawn any more monsters now, right? I hope another bunch of them don't appear later!" Ye Shi threw down the already dulled woodcutter's knife, wiped his sweat from his brow, and cursed under his breath.
Fang Chang shook his head and said, "It shouldn't be. We've killed enough, and I've used up all my arrows."
The weapon he's using now is a mechanical composite bow that cost him a full 200 silver coins to buy from the administrator, Dawn. Its arrows are quite powerful.
During today's monster-clearing process, the number of Devourers he killed was second only to Li Yuan, and much more efficient than Ye Shi and his group who were wielding knives.
Old Bai leaned against the wall, silently counted in his mind, and sighed:
"There are over a hundred mutants in just this one building, and there are probably even more in places like the subway tracks and sewers. We can't kill them all."
Kuangfeng laughed, "What's wrong with having a lot of monsters? They're all experience points! How can you level up without them?"
After listening to the group chat for a while, Li Yuan stood up, picked up the various tools he had prepared in advance, and said, "You guys take a break first, I'll go check out what's going on with that radioactive source."
"Go, go."
Be careful.
"Keep it up, we're waiting for your good news."
"Just call us if you need anything."
The rest of the team waved goodbye with smiles.
Based on the map scanned by VM, Li Yuan easily located the area with the strongest radiation index.
This is a corridor of moderate width, which was probably a spare warehouse or similar place before the war.
But now, all that remains here is the bodily fluids of gnaws and crawlers, and unknown fungi growing in the corners.
At the end of the passage was a rusty alloy door, and lying in front of it was a corpse wearing a hazmat suit.
The corpse was reduced to bones, with no signs of gnawing or tearing. It appeared to have died before the predators took over the area, at least several decades earlier.
The backpack next to the body contained some canned food, probably supplies scavenged from outside.
Shifting his gaze back to the alloy door, Li Yuan patted it and then abandoned the idea of punching it through. He decisively placed the explosives on it and lit the fuse.
boom!
The thick smoke from the explosion instantly filled the entire passageway. The alloy door remained unmoved, but the concrete wall next to it was blasted open, exposing the steel reinforcement structure inside.
Seeing this, he picked up a crowbar, reached his hand through the broken wall, and pried open the bolt locks one by one.
With a creaking sound, the heavy alloy door finally opened, and a musty smell of stale air rushed out.
Li Yuan lit the lantern and looked around at the environment behind the door.
All indications suggest that this place was once a small shelter.
However, compared to Vault 404, this place is much simpler and the layout is quite compact.
Directly behind the alloy door are rows of moss-covered shelves, displaying glassware.
This area appears to be a planting area, where soilless cultivation technology is used to produce crops such as vegetables and staple foods, while also improving the air quality within the shelter.
However, after so many years, the water in the culture tank has long since dried up, leaving only a layer of dead moss and a few pieces of dried debris and curled plant fibers.
Behind the planting area, there are rows of actual shelves.
Gold, silver, copper, steel, aluminum, lead, and other metal ingots of uniform specifications are neatly arranged on it.
In addition, there were large quantities of non-metallic materials such as fiberglass, rubber products, graphite powder, hydraulic oil, lubricants, and adhesives, as well as some unidentified liquid or powdery chemicals.
These materials, unlike the trash scattered in the ruins, have clearly undergone special treatment and are remarkably well-preserved.
Right behind the container is a fully equipped and fully functional worktable.
Li Yuan had no intention of delving into these things; his gaze swept over them quickly without lingering.
He went straight to the back of the worktable and pushed open the tightly closed door.
Behind the door was a clearly visible living area, with a damaged hibernation pod placed against the wall, facing the entrance.
Judging from the open hatch and the scattered parts and tools nearby, someone must have tried to fix it, but failed.
Next to the hibernation pod was a single bed with two skeletons lying on it. Judging from their shape and size, they should both be adult women.
Li Yuan had no intention of delving into the stories that had happened here. After scanning the room, his gaze settled on a generator-like device.
