Chapter 3998 Bernhardt's Hunting Plan

Chapter 3998 Bernhardt's Hunting Plan

Xia De wasn't surprised that the Blood Spirit School knew about the "Spark of Life." In 1853, when he first arrived in this world, he heard that the Blood Spirit School had found the "Birthplace of Creation" in the New World, and that they had probably made great progress in the past two years.

However, even with such a vigorous "twisted life spark" obtained from the aberration, the spark cannot exist independently of its carrier.

To prevent it from escaping and causing further trouble, Shad first apologized to his two companions, explaining that he would need to use a secret method to deal with it. After they temporarily stepped aside, he retrieved the source of the fire with his left hand. After a simple activation, the fire held in his right hand transformed into a thin stream of light, entering the burning eye.

Having dealt with the distorted life sparks, Shad called back his companions and then lifted the time freeze on the monster. Having lost its immense life force, the "Life Aberration" lost its ability to maintain its form the moment Shad finished casting his spell, disintegrating into a pool of pale flesh and blood.

Before the flesh and blood merged into the sewage beneath their feet, Mr. Finch cast a spell to levitate it for easier collection. He clearly wanted to go back and analyze what it was.

Although he, like Shad and Mr. Bernhardt, could see that it was simply a mass of dissolved human tissue, he wanted to investigate what permanent changes the "distorted life spark" would cause to normal flesh. Finding the answer to this question might greatly aid his subsequent investigations.

After searching the reservoir, which seemed to be used as a "nest," the three found numerous rotting corpses in the deepest corner of the reservoir.

Most of these corpses had already turned into skeletons, with only a few appearing to have appeared recently. The relatively fresh corpses, however, showed no fatal wounds, indicating that they had all their life force drained from them.

Based on the number of skulls, there are a total of 24 corpses here, but the earliest corpse cannot be determined by simple observation.

So the three of them then performed spirit communication on the corpses that were capable of communicating with spirits, asking each corpse about its specific circumstances.

The good news is that the mutated monster that devours life force apparently has no ability to prevent souls from being channeled; the bad news is that these corpses, whose life force has been completely drained, are themselves contaminated by the "Twisted Life Spark," thus affecting the channeling effects based on corpses.

Therefore, although most souls can manifest, they have difficulty answering questions with complete sentences. Even so, the three still managed to obtain some information.

The earliest traceable death occurred on the last day of 1854, and most of the dead here were residents of the outer city and refugees.

The deceased described their causes of death in similar ways: "It was as if something precious had vanished from my body," but they did not understand the mutant, nor did they know where it came from.

Even so, among all the spirits successfully psychic, one person still provided valuable information. He was among the first refugees to flee from the front lines to Arcadia City, and presumably because he was alone and had no companions, he was attacked upon arrival.

What made him special was that his soul didn't leave immediately after death; instead, it lingered for three days due to its unyielding resentment. During those three days, he witnessed something extraordinary—

"One of these corpses suddenly stood up. I don't know if it was the legendary undead, but I could sense that it was extremely hungry. The monster you killed hadn't paid any attention to it at first, but as it stumbled outwards, it bumped into the monster, and the monster extracted some red light spots from it."

The soul then thanked the three for helping him avenge himself and gave them a verbal blessing before finally dissipating completely, satisfied.

"There are only 25 people here, but one of the corpses just happened to have developed a 'distorted life spark,' turning into what Mr. Watson called a 'living corpse.' Isn't that too much of a coincidence?"

Mr. Bernhardt realized what the spirit had just said:

"Could it be that people who die from having their life force drained are more likely to be resurrected by the 'distorted life force'?"

Mr. Finch agreed with his conjecture:

"It is precisely because of lack that we crave, which in turn brings about calamities that should not exist in this world. Your guess is probably correct."

He looked at the bones and flesh that the three men had retrieved, and said softly:

"Whether dead or alive, once they come into contact with the fire, they will crave more life, thus creating more resurrected corpses that are prone to producing fire. These corpses will then continue to draw fire from other living beings, thus creating even more corpses."

Furthermore, according to the soul just now, monsters possessing the 'Twisted Life Flame' will not kill each other unless they are directly touched.

Mr. Bernhardt imagined this snowball-like future:

"If we don't intervene, sooner or later, all that will be left in this world are those unconscious corpses wandering around, yearning for life."

His description was incredibly accurate. Adele from a past life had mentioned to Shad that in the post-apocalyptic era, this was the most common type of monster. And now Shad knew that these were monsters that appeared due to the "Calamity of Creation."

"The Church of the True God is suspected of researching mechanical life, while the illegal ring sorcerers are researching flesh and blood aberrations. Everyone really has something to do."

Shad remarked that he himself didn't find the remark particularly humorous, yet Mr. Finch actually laughed:

"Yes, this is the norm in the world. Civilization develops on the edge of danger."

He didn't say anything more:

"It seems that the clues here have come to an end. The only way to find out is to continue hunting these monsters in the sewers to determine how much their birth is related to the Blood Spirit School."

Mr. Bernhardt nodded solemnly:

"Let us do this. My companions and I are experts at hunting flesh and blood in this kind of dark environment. Hopefully, they can tolerate this stench. Now let's see who is the real hunter in the dark, the 'Sewer Killer' or us."

I will let you know if I get any further leads.

Then he saw Shad looking at him with concern. Vampire Seed Lord knew, of course, that Shad was thinking about what happened last Friday. He confidently went to the lake to cause trouble for two ordinary people, but he fainted as soon as he got close.

“I will be careful this time, and Velendale has sent some useful ‘equipment’ again. Now that we know on Friday that those ‘wild vampires’ were involved, I will be extra careful against any attacks from my own kind.”

The three then cleaned up the remains, and Shad used magic to purify the area he had contaminated before leaving together. The two-hour sewer investigation that morning came to an end.

Mr. Bernhardt was to gather the vampires who had come with him to announce the day's harvest and to test whether there was a traitor among the group; Mr. Finch was to examine the origin of the corpses, analyze the composition of the pale flesh, and write a report for the Hermitage.

As for Shad, although his morning investigation did not uncover any direct traces of the Blood Spirit School, the appearance of the new monsters improved his understanding of the "Calamity of Creation."

The life force of a higher-level vampire contained within the mutant might be the breakthrough for the next step in the investigation of the Blood Spirit School. However, this depends on news from Mr. Bernhardt; there's no need for Shad to personally deal with this monster yet.

Now, he was going back to "Fragrance Residence" to have lunch with Wei Ge.

Of course, before going back, Shad didn't forget to clean himself up first. If the smell of the sewers got into Vigo's house, "Fragrant Residence" might have to be renamed "Stinky Residence".

This was simple for him; he could easily restore his clothes and shoes to their original state from when he left home that morning simply by rewinding time. While the "Breath of Time" had no effect on him personally, Shad noticed that after his clothes were clean, he didn't smell at all.

He seemed to have unknowingly acquired the quality of being "untainted by dust".

Returning from the outer city was too far, so after saying goodbye to his two friends and once again asking Mr. Finch to help him inquire about the [Active Metal], Shad chose to drop the crystal shoe and return home, then appeared directly in the lower city from home.

He got home at 11:30 a.m., and Winnie probably had something to do and didn't come. Although Galina might send a maid to check on the cat around noon, Shad still asked Mia:

"Would you like to come with me to Arcadia City for lunch?"

"Meow~"

The moment he reached out, the cat leaped onto his arm and nimbly settled onto his shoulder. Shad chuckled and then took Mia to Fragrant Abode as well. Judging by the time, the cat hadn't left the house for over a week; perhaps today was another rare day when it was willing to relax.

The morning fog had long since dissipated, and the weather in the upper part of Arcadia City was fine at noon. When Shad arrived at Fragrant Mansion, Viggo was still asleep, so Shad gestured to Miss McDonald not to disturb her.

"Wait a little longer. If she hasn't woken up by midnight, have Miss Rowling wake her up again so that Viggo can rest a little longer."

When the witch woke up at midnight, she heard that Shad had told her to sleep a little longer and that she had been waiting for half an hour. So she hurriedly had the maids help her with her hair and makeup. She then heard that it was her student who was keeping Shad company so that he wouldn't get bored, so she immediately felt that Eve was indeed helping her as promised.

When Viggo arrived at the restaurant on the first floor, which had a huge round table, she saw Shad engrossed in a paper discussion with Eve McDonald. The two were so absorbed that Viggo didn't realize Eve had already come downstairs until she entered the restaurant.
