Chapter 4773 The Royal Casino (Part 7)
After leading the two to safety, Greed breathed a sigh of relief. These two were crucial to their victory, especially Matt. His map-finding skills were extremely important; if he had died, the gamblers' chances of winning would have been greatly reduced.
“He’s like a completely different person,” Matt said. “His movements aren’t as stiff, and he’s not as slow. He’s as agile as he is in real life. What were the game designers thinking? Did they really want Batman to be Batman in the game?”
"You mean he doesn't have any other skills, he just became like Batman?" Greed asked.
Matt nodded and said, "At least I didn't see him use any unique skills. It just looked like Batman's fighting style, much more agile than before."
“I see,” Greed said. “It seems the game designers’ strategy for Batman’s abilities was to weaken him first, and then let him regain his original strength. This is going to be a bit troublesome.”
“This Batman is exceptionally strong,” Superman said. “In terms of hand-to-hand combat skills alone, none of us could possibly be his match. Did you find what was in the safe?”
Both of them shook their heads. Superman sighed and said, "Let's hurry up and find them. I've found two. If we find three more, we'll win."
"What? We only need to find three more?" Matt was a little surprised. He'd been so focused on helping Greed make money that he hadn't paid much attention to the winning conditions. With his amazing map-finding skills, finding three things should be a piece of cake, right?
Superman nodded and said, "If we split up, we should be able to finish quickly. By the way, I saw you used a gadget. Where did you get it? A slot machine?"
As soon as he asked the question, Greed stuffed a bunch of props into his arms and said, "Take this and hurry up and find the safe."
"Why me?" Superman asked. "I was planning to do the same thing, but you don't have to give me all the gadgets."
“Don’t you understand? You’re the luckiest one among us,” Greed explained. “We’ve been wandering around in the map for ages and haven’t found a single safe, while you found two at once. That proves you’re perfect for this job. If you die, we’re all doomed.”
"Don't worry," Superman's fighting spirit burned brightly, "I will definitely lead you to victory in this game!"
After Superman left with the props, Matt said with some doubt, "You didn't really give him all the props, did you?"
"I've saved a few for you." Greed pulled out a few more items. He had the skill to manipulate the odds of winning, and he almost always won every time he gambled, making a lot of money. The items that were just for survival weren't expensive, so he bought a whole bunch of them.
"Aren't you going to keep some for yourself?" Matt said.
Greed shook his head again, gave all his chips to Matt, and said, "Go find the safe as soon as possible."
Matt narrowed his eyes, looking at Greed, and said, "You sound like you're giving your last words. It's not time for that yet."
“We’re here,” Greed said. “I know better than you how strong this Batman is. If he regains his Batman powers, no one else can hold him off.”
"Why? You clearly don't have any attack or escape skills, so you should be the one who's least likely to hold him off, right?"
"Whether he can hold them off doesn't depend on how strong the other party is, but on how important they are," Greed said. "No matter how strong you are, if he doesn't want to play with you, you can't tie him down. Only those he wants to kill can hold him off."
Matt frowned deeply. He knew that Batman from Arkham would definitely want to kill Greed, not only because Greed was the most important figure on the Gamblers' side, but also because he had saved two major threats. From both a profit and emotional perspective, Greed would definitely be Batman's number one target.
But precisely because of this, we can't let him succeed. His greed in producing so many items in such a short time is a testament to his operational prowess. The longer he survives, the greater his chances of winning.
Matt expressed his opinion, saying with a mixture of greed and helplessness, "You've all been defeated by your own greed. The problem now is that, apart from me, no one can hold him back. You won't succeed even if you go."
"We should at least give it a try."
"This is just your personal heroism at work."
"Because I am a superhero."
“But I’m your friend. You should know me. What I want is the final victory; what I have to give up along the way is not that important.”
Matt knew he couldn't persuade Greed, so he could only say, "I can only assure you that I will seize victory as much as possible and fight to the last moment."
Greed smiled at him.
The detective stood in front of the safe, reading the note. He had found the safe on the street, a chance encounter. But he hadn't expected the note to be so long, and he had to stand there the whole time, concentrating on solving the puzzle, without letting his mind wander, or he would likely be interrupted.
Just as he was fully focused, he suddenly sensed something behind him. He immediately interrupted the casting and took off running. The launch start was indeed very powerful; he disappeared in a flash.
However, as he ran, the agent glanced back and saw that it was indeed Batman from Arkham. He was puzzled; there had been background music when Batman approached before, so why was it completely silent now, without even a warning?
However, the agent had reviewed the Hunter's memories and knew that Batman had likely received an upgrade. Fortunately, even the upgraded Batman wasn't as fast as him, so as long as he was careful, it was unlikely he would be caught.
He didn't believe Arkham Batman was there to talk to him. Although he seemed to have sided with the house, he knew perfectly well that given the chance, Arkham Batman would still take him down. Every American president only cares about their voters during election season—that's an eternal truth.
Arkham Batman previously approached him for cooperation because his power suit wasn't strong enough at the time, lacking offensive capabilities, so he hoped the agent could deliver the decisive blow. However, now that he's been enhanced, whether or not an agent is present is essentially irrelevant. Therefore, if they encounter each other, he might not hesitate to take action.
As for the new skills, the agent didn't even glance at them. If they were just buffs to Batman, the agent might be interested in using them. The problem is, they're basically all about sabotage, either slowing down the safe-opening process or interfering with shops, preventing them from opening. These skills offer no room for strategic maneuvering; they purely detract from the game experience for others, and the agent has no intention of using them.
After circling downstairs for a while, the agent's ejection launch cooldown was almost over, so he went back upstairs to open the original safe. The loading screen hadn't been up for long when Arkham Batman appeared again.
The agent launched himself away again, and Batman couldn't catch him. This time, the agent circled the building twice, and when his abilities were ready again, he returned to open the safe. Then, not long after, Arkham Batman showed up again.
The agent was on the run again, but this time, the president's call notification rang again. The agent ran a little further away and answered the phone.
"Why are you so obsessed with this safe?" Batman Arkham asked.
"What are you talking about? Do you think I can find any other safe?" the detective said with a sneer. "If I don't open this one, which one can I open?"
Batman from Arkham seemed speechless. The agent wasn't deliberately being sarcastic; he was just stating the facts. With his speed-enhancing ability, he should be the fastest map explorer, and indeed, he's explored the largest area so far, yet he's only encountered this one safe. If he had any luck finding several safes in a row, he wouldn't have been stuck with just this one. Isn't there just no other way?
“Don’t hang up.” Arkham Batman anticipated his move perfectly, then said, “Is our cooperation still valid?”
"Effective what?" the agent retorted. "You're so strong now, you don't need me at all. Who knows if you'll discard me after you've served your purpose?"
"Don't you trust my character?"
“I believe in Batman’s character…” the agent paused, “but I will never believe in the President of the United States.”
He hung up the phone after saying that, preparing to go back and open the safe. He was determined to fight Arkham Batman today; let him keep wasting his time here if he dared.
When the agent returned, Arkham Batman didn't come back. So he easily opened the safe and took what was inside. This was the third safe to be opened.
The agent knew that the more safes he opened, the stronger Arkham Batman became. However, because he had seen the Hunter's memories, he knew that the difference in strength between the second and third seals was not significant, only a slight increase, which is why he dared to open them with confidence.
But to everyone's surprise, as soon as he came out of the room with the safes, Lucifer opened the fourth safe. This was something no one had expected.
Since entering the game, all Lucifer had done was wander around the map. But he was lucky; he came across a safe while wandering around, and so he kept opening it.
Batman, busy slashing Superman and Matt, indulging in greed, gambling, and saving lives, remained completely unaffected. So despite failing to solve the puzzle several times, he still managed to open the safe.
Arkham Batman gave a knowing smile. With the map function, he could see the location of the safes. And there weren't actually many safes—only three more than the required five. Plus, climbing stairs was easy for Arkham Batman now; he went to turn off the power and checked the safes' locations on the way.
He had already seen Lucifer opening the safe, but he didn't stop him, nor did he even show himself to scare him. Instead, he went to the agent, even repeatedly going to him. This was to imply to the agent: you are the only one opening the safe, and I must stop you.
In this way, the agent would keep opening the safe until it was fully opened. Arkham Batman, by appearing in the background, carefully controlled the speed at which the agent opened the safe. This ensured that both the agent's and Lucifer's safes were opened almost simultaneously.
The moment the fourth safe was opened, Arkham Batman entered his full form. The Batman suit was greatly enhanced, gaining his most important passive ability—"Unspeakable Fear."
In an instant, all the lights in the entire casino went out, plunging everyone into complete darkness.
Superman stopped what he was doing, looked up in shock, but saw only darkness. Suddenly, he heard the patter of rain.
Superman carefully felt his way along the wall to the window; the sound of rain was coming from outside. Just as he was about to listen closely, a bright light illuminated the entire room in dazzling white.
"Crack!"
Thunder flashed across the sky, its deep roar like the panting of some wild beast. The continuous flashes of lightning caused the light inside to flicker incessantly. Rain pattered against the glass, leaving damp marks.
Just as another beam of light appeared, Superman stared intently out the window. The next second, his pupils contracted sharply—the city's outline felt strangely familiar, and in the distance, the spire of Gotham Cathedral pierced through the dark clouds.
No wonder it was always pitch black outside the window, with thick fog making it impossible to see anything. This casino is in Gotham!
But then he realized a very important problem—Gotham is Batman's home turf, and they are being hunted down by Batman!
