Chapter 378 Indescribable Feeling
Chapter 378 Indescribable Feeling
For Spider-Man, time has passed and he continues to stare off into the distance. He ponders on his life after all these drastic events.
Eventually, Spider-Man got tired of the sight of the day and headed back inside the temple, where he saw a familiar face walking nearby.
"Barris?"
Barris turned to the New York native and looked surprised when he saw him.
"Peter," she said, smiling, and walked over to him. "How are you?"
"Yes," Spider-Man said nervously.
"Yes and you--"
*Grunt
The Queens native instinctively flinched, looking around wildly.
"Wow! What was that sound just now? "Did you hear it——"
He froze when he saw Barris's eyes wide and embarrassed look.
The two were silent for a moment until Spider-Man couldn't help but laugh.
"Are you hungry?" Spider-Man asked with a grin.
She puffed up her red cheeks slightly, slightly disdainful of the teasing.
"Come on, I'll treat you to a meal."
"Do you have any points?" Barris asked in surprise.
"um, yes."
"Would you like to walk or take the scenic route?"
Barris assumed a thinking pose, placed his index finger on his lips, and let out a small, playful hum.
It didn’t take long for the decision to be made.
Spider-Man swung between a series of buildings, carrying Miriam Padawan on his back, who yelled with excitement.
"This is amazing!" she exclaimed happily.
Spider-Man laughed. "Can't you use the force to jump around?"
“This is so different than what I was trained for,” Barris said, tilting her head back with her eyes closed, enjoying the feel of the wind against her face.
“Well, if you weren’t a gymnast, I’d dissuade you, but since you’re a Jedi… who knows, maybe I can tell you the basics.
"I might like that." She said happily. "I'm sure Ahsoka would jump at the chance.
Spider-Man smiled again. "I have no doubt about that."
The two soon arrived at a popular restaurant, and once they entered, they saw a packed house with almost every booth and seat occupied.
This fills Spider-Man with nostalgia because it reminds him of home.
"How unfortunate," Barris muttered in disappointment at the crowded house. "Perhaps we could take the food to go."
Before Spider-Man could respond, a cheerful voice called out from behind the bar.
"Peter!"
The two turned around to see a four-armed alien waddling out of the kitchen with a huge smile on his face.
"Hey, Dexter," Spider-Man said cheerfully.
The owner of the Besalisk restaurant walked straight up to the New Yorker.
"Come, you little fellow. What can I do for you, my friend?"
"We need a table for two, or some seating at the bar."
Dex waved, "I just opened a table a few seconds ago. Just need to clean it up.
“Are you sure? It looks like you’ve been waiting in a long line.
"Phew, there's always a table open for you and the Avengers," the owner of the Basilisk restaurant said happily, patting Spider-Man on the shoulder.
Barris watched, curious.
"How did you know each other?"
Dex pointed at the Terran with both thumbs up. "This boy and his people have been a gold mine since Obi-Wan introduced them to me. Business has been booming since they showed me some recipes from their home world. I'll be opening more restaurants on Coruscant. Maybe on other worlds, maybe Naboo or Alderaan. Friendly Republic territories are possible."
The two were quickly led to a booth and Dexter pulled out a notepad.
"So what do you two want to eat? It's my treat," he asked.
"Dexter, you can't—"
"What's the measly merit of buying a meal for the kid who brought me pizza?" Dex retorted before Spider-Man even finished his sentence. "Now, come on, what do you want to eat?"
The two stared at the menu for a few minutes before placing their order with Dex.
"Okay, I'll be right there." He said and left.
"I'll leave money for the meal." Spider-Man said bluntly. "The tip I leave will be enough to cover our meal."
Barris simply smiled approvingly at her friend and leaned back in her seat to make herself more comfortable.
The two chatted while waiting for their meals. Both tried to keep the topic away from the current war and conflict. They just wanted to have fun and not ruin the hard-earned relaxed atmosphere by bringing up certain topics.
It was quite lighthearted and enjoyable, with the two sharing stories of growing up and topics of interest such as science, history and culture of their respective hometowns.
This continued as they ate, joking and reminiscing about the happy times they had in their respective pasts.
After finishing their meal, Spider-Man leaves a "tip" on their table before saying goodbye to Dexter.
The two were back to square one, Barris holding Spider-Man close, a feeling of contentment washing over her as they journeyed aimlessly across Coruscant.
They continued for a while until Barris asked if they could relax for a moment.
Landing on the roof of a high-rise building, the two teens looked ahead as Barriss wanted to take a break from her excitement.
"That's great," she said happily. "You always do this?"
"Well, not all the time, but it does help get around quicker." Spider-Man said.
"I can see that."
The two were silent for a long time, without saying a word, until...
"Hey, Barris."
"Ok?"
"Thank you."
She looked at him with a confused smile. "What?"
“It’s just… I guess I didn’t realize I needed this,” Peter said, suddenly feeling a lot lighter. “I’m glad I actually did something pretty normal. It was just me and a friend out for dinner, not thinking about anything too serious.”
Barris looked at him in surprise, which then turned into a warm smile.
"I should have said that," she said softly. "I've never done anything like it, you know. It was a great time. I hope we can do it again sometime in the future. Maybe Ahsoka can join us next time."
"Yeah, that would be great," he said, facing her with a bright smile. "But I need to figure out how you two can find me at the same time while I'm wandering around."
Barris shrugged. "I think we can work something out."
"Okay then, we'll go together next time."
She smiled at him and suddenly felt her heartbeat quicken.
It was subtle in a way, but she felt it all the same.
A slight constriction welled up in her chest, something she couldn't quite explain. She thought back to the conversation she and Ahsoka had had not long ago, and believed that perhaps it was one of the feelings she had developed after spending so much time with the boy in front of her.
Barris stared at Spider-Man, his eyes lost as several images flashed before her eyes.
Spider-Man, injured after Jabimu.
After that, Ahsoka lay beside her while slowly losing her healthy orange complexion to the point where she was almost translucent, all because of the virus she had contracted on Naboo.
Barris let out a horrified gasp as the memory faded.
The native New Yorker quickly noticed this and started to worry.
"Wow, wow, wow." Spider-Man walked straight to Barris, put his hands on her shoulders, and looked at her worriedly. "Barris, are you okay?"
The feeling in her chest tightened and she coughed, shaking her shoulder slightly, but Spider-Man didn't remove his hand.
"I-I'm sorry," she said quickly. "I-I don't know what's wrong."
“That’s okay. But would you mind telling me what happened?
She didn't answer immediately, but tried to calm herself. However, on a personal level, the vision she had seen was too intense for her.
Barris had no idea what was happening. In the past, she had been able to handle her emotions, but now it was becoming increasingly difficult.
She tried to suppress it, to ignore it, but it had the opposite desired effect.
This quickly overwhelmed her, and after her last failed attempt, she stopped.
So she started crying.
Spider-Man's eyes widened when he saw his friend crying.
"Hey, hey, Barris." He subconsciously put his hand on her cheek and wiped away a tear.
She let out a shaky breath and closed her eyes, leaning back into his palm, shaking all the while.
Barris opened her eyes when she heard Spider-Man nervously calling her name, and looked up at a worried Spider-Man who looked conflicted because he didn't know what to do in this situation.
"Talk to me, Barris," he said quietly. "What's wrong?"
Barris stared into Spider-Man's eyes and became attached.
According to the organization she belonged to, some things were forbidden.
While forming attachments is a strange topic, taking it any further is highly discouraged in the Jedi Order.
However, Barris couldn’t help but deal with so much that had happened in the past few months.
Not long ago she was confident in herself, but now...
Now, after everything she's been through...
The Jedi began to realize how terrifying these new sensations were for someone like her who had always been instructed to be wary of them.
"I-I…I saw you and Ahsoka were hurt. You were both…" she stuttered, squeezing her eyes shut tightly, unable to finish the sentence as more tears continued to stream down her face and onto Spider-Man's hands.
Spider-Man's eyes widened to the size of small saucers, not expecting that answer.
He opened his mouth, trying to find something to say, but his upset friend moved before he could say anything.
Barris gripped Spider-Man's shirt tightly before pulling him close and wrapping his arms around his neck while burying his head in his chest.
She felt him wrap his hands around her, holding her tighter than before. Spider-Man patted his hands gently up and down her back, feeling her frame go slack, but her grip on him remained strong.
"Are you okay, Barris, I'm here, I'm here."
