Chapter 158 Moving to New York
Chapter 161: Moving to New York
Back at the hotel, Li Wenbin and Zheng Jiaming were still immersed in the excitement of the game. In their room, Lin Yan placed Xiaoqi on the sofa and discussed the upcoming arrangements with the two of them.
"We could go to New York," Lin Yan suggested. "As for skiing, it's only November now, we can wait a bit. The best ski season at Lake Tahoe is December."
The suggestion was agreed upon by both of them. Li Wenbin was very interested in the Empire State Building and immediately expressed his desire to go. The itinerary was thus set: to go to New York first.
That night, Lin Yan contacted Charles through the spatial imprint and ordered him to lead a group of people back to New York overnight to make arrangements.
The next morning, Ethan arranged a car to take Lin Yan and the others to the airport. Before boarding, Lin Yan instructed Ethan, "Once we get to New York, Charles will be there, so you don't need to come along. Go and meet up with Alexander."
"Yes, young master." Ethan bowed and accepted the order.
The plane landed at LaGuardia Airport in New York. As Lin Yan and his group walked out of the terminal, they immediately saw Charles already waiting at the exit with Harper in his arms.
Lin Yan naturally took Xiao Qi and, along with Li Wenbin and Zheng Jiaming, got into the waiting Lincoln Continental. The accompanying servants quickly loaded the luggage into the convoy.
The convoy started and headed towards Manhattan. Lin Yan's villa on the Upper East Side was very close by; it was about a half-hour drive from the airport.
The Lincoln Continental drove out of LaGuardia Airport and merged into the traffic of New York. For Li Wenbin and Zheng Jiaming, who were visiting New York for the first time, the scenery outside the car window was full of novelty.
"This is New York. The buildings are so dense," Li Wenbin said, looking at the buildings flashing by outside the window, his tone filled with the bewilderment of someone arriving in a strange metropolis for the first time.
Zheng Jiaming nodded in agreement: "It feels more...organized than Hong Kong, and the atmosphere is different too."
About half an hour later, the vehicle entered an area where the atmosphere was noticeably quieter and the streets were cleaner.
"Young masters, this is the Upper East Side," Charles, sitting in the passenger seat, turned to introduce to Zheng Jiaming and Li Wenbin.
Li Wenbin and Zheng Jiaming curiously looked out the window at the row houses and apartment buildings with a uniform style and well-maintained appearance. They felt that the environment here was indeed different from the places they had passed before, exuding a sense of calm and order.
The vehicle eventually stopped in front of one of the detached houses. Charles got out first and opened the car door for Lin Yan and the others.
Everyone got out of the car, and Charles led them towards the gate. Looking at the house before him, Li Wenbin said to Lin Yan, "Yan, your house is in a really good location; it looks very quiet."
Zheng Jiaming also looked at the building's exterior and commented, "This stone facade looks very solid and has a sense of history."
Upon entering the foyer, the high ceilings and spacious layout prompted both of them to nod in approval.
"This entryway is really spacious, it feels great," Li Wenbin said. His family is also well-off, and he appreciates this kind of spatial design more.
Zheng Jiaming noticed the interior furnishings and said to Lin Yan, "The lines of these furniture pieces are very modern, which is quite unique when placed together with the classic exterior of your house."
As Charles led them on a brief tour of the living room, dining room, and other areas, their reactions were more like the natural expressions of appreciation one would expect when friends visit each other.
"The living room has great natural light and a wide view," Li Wenbin commented.
Upon seeing the small sunroom connected to the kitchen, Zheng Jiaming said, "Putting some plants here would be very comfortable; it would be nice to have tea and read here in the afternoon."
When they arrived at the lush, green private courtyard behind the house, enclosed by a high wall, both of them showed expressions of appreciation.
"It's so rare to find such a small garden in the heart of New York City," Zheng Jiaming exclaimed.
Li Wenbin nodded in agreement: "Yes, it's much better to get some fresh air here than to be stuffy indoors."
Lin Yan looked at his two friends and smiled, "It's alright, isn't it? I mainly just wanted some peace and quiet. You two can make yourselves at home and stay wherever you like."
"Do you even need to tell me?" Li Wenbin chuckled and patted Lin Yan on the shoulder. "We certainly won't hold back with you."
After touring the accommodations, Li Wenbin asked impatiently, "Ayan, when are we going to the Empire State Building? I want to see the panoramic view of New York as soon as possible!"
The conversation quickly turned to their upcoming sightseeing plans, their anticipation of New York City overshadowing their initial awkwardness upon arriving at their unfamiliar accommodations. Charles quietly stepped aside and began directing the servants to properly settle their luggage.
As noon approached, Lin Yan instructed Wang Yuling, who was standing beside him, "Yuling, let's have hot pot in the courtyard for lunch. Prepare the dishes using ingredients from your spatial storage, and make a separate portion for Xiao Qi as well."
"Yes, young master." Wang Yuling accepted the order and turned to go to the kitchen to get busy.
The sun shone brightly, and a gentle breeze blew. Under the large, leafy tree in the courtyard, the dining table was already set. When the steaming copper pot and the dazzling array of side dishes were brought out, Li Wenbin immediately cheered, "Sister Yuling, this is wonderful! I've missed your cooking so much!" The rich and fragrant aroma of the broth filled the air, making one's mouth water.
Wang Yuling prepared a Cantonese hot pot that better suited their tastes, with a clear and refreshing broth that emphasized the original flavor of the ingredients. The beef from the restaurant was glossy and the fat was distributed like marble; the handmade fish balls were white and bouncy; and all kinds of vegetables were fresh and sweet. Li Wenbin ate with great relish, constantly picking up his chopsticks, too busy to say much.
During the meal, Zheng Jiaming remembered something, put down his chopsticks, and naturally looked at Lin Yan and asked, "Yan, speaking of which, you're only sixteen this year, right? You should be in school, so how come you always seem to have time to travel around and not have to go to school?" His tone was one of friendly concern, without any intention of prying.
Lin Yan was placing a slice of cooked beef into Xiao Qi's special bowl when he heard this. Without looking up, he replied in a casual yet reasonable tone, "Oh, this. I haven't been feeling well lately, I have some heart problems, and the doctor suggested I take a break from school for a while to rest." He wiped his hands with a napkin before looking at Zheng Jiaming, a nonchalant smile on his lips. "Anyway, you probably know my family's situation. I don't expect to find a job with a diploma. I might as well take this opportunity to travel and see more of the world, and play as long as I want. My family occasionally hires tutors to give me lessons, so it's not like I'm completely wasting my time."
This explanation makes perfect sense. Zheng Jiaming nodded knowingly and said with concern, "I see. Health is the most important thing. It's good that you've recovered now." He didn't ask any more questions and focused his attention back on the delicious hot pot.
Li Wenbin also looked up from his food for a moment and mumbled, "That's right, being able to play is a blessing! You can study any day, right?" After saying that, he buried himself in his food again.
Lunch continued in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. Little Qi guarded her little bowl, eating without looking up, her tail tip wagging happily.
