Chapter 20: Taking stock of the losses and preparing to clean up the battlefield.
Looking at the greatsword stuck in the armor plate, Lorraine was still somewhat shaken. Ouyang Nian helped Lorraine up, saying, "It's alright, it's alright."
Lorraine looked at Ouyang Nian and said, "This thing of yours breaks way too easily!"
"Is it possible that the high-explosive shell missed its target, rather than that my design flawed?"
"Oh, so isn't the result of your design still a problem?" Lorraine glanced at Ouyang Nian.
"I was wrong." Ouyang Nian raised his hands in surrender.
"Hey, hey, don't let go!" Lorraine hadn't recovered yet and was about to kneel down.
"You can't do that either. Didn't you run away as soon as it raised its hand?" Seeing that Lorraine didn't seem to be blaming him, Ouyang Nian promptly began to mock her.
"You!" Lorraine shook off Ouyang Nian and was about to speak when Ouyang Nian spread his hands with a wicked grin. "See, it's all over now." "Quick, check the kill reward."
"Listen and Heavenly Dog, be on alert. Assess the danger yourself. Firing is permitted."
"receive"
The two then returned to the driver's seat to check their kill reward.
[169 mutated zombies killed]
[56 Acidic Mutant Fat Men]
[78 reptiles]
[35 howlers]
[One mutated special individual]
[One leader of the horde]
[Rewards: 100 units of fuel, 500 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 300 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 30mm high-explosive rounds, 50 rounds of armor-piercing discarding sabot rounds, 20 rounds of 40mm grenade launchers, blueprint for the Tier 1 M60E4 light machine gun, blueprint for the Tier 1 GM6 Lynx sniper rifle, Smart Upgrade Components, Tier 1 Ship Upgrade Material Pack x1.]
[Environmental kill rewards: 1 individual flamethrower, 6 fuel canisters, 4 gas masks]
"What's going on with this upgrade kit?" Ouyang Nian discovered the blind spot.
Lorraine shook her head and said, "I don't know." Then she clicked on the instructions behind the upgrade material pack.
Using upgrade material packs can reduce the amount of materials needed for upgrades.
Each material pack, upon upgrade, can randomly add a new function to a ship; a maximum of three functions can be used.
[Radar functions: including search and surveillance radar, fire control radar, and weather radar]
[Life support functions: hydroponic farm, air filtration system]
[Medical Functions: Level 1 Medical Stations can manufacture medical supply kits, providing battlefield medical services]
"Wow, there's a lot of good stuff here, but this materials pack must be hard to get, right?"
"It seems to have been obtained by killing the horde leader, but this mutated special individual gave me a smart upgrade component, which should be used to improve the ship's computing power. I just don't know if it has any other effects."
The upgrade components have been installed.
Remote control function is activated.
"That means we can start building the fleet now," Lorraine said excitedly. After all, a ship's cargo capacity is limited, and now they can start modifying other ships to provide services for them. "I just don't know what the distance limit is for this remote control function."
[Distance limit: one nautical mile (approximately 2 kilometers)]
"Not big, but enough. After all, where else can you find another gunboat? There are probably only some small flat-bottomed boats around here."
"Ideally, it should be a transport ship with a crane." At this point, Lorraine remembered that the intelligence system had previously indicated there was a dock nearby.
"Ouyang Nian, go and get the shells from the warehouse and load them onto the 30mm machine gun. We'll replace the foredeck armor plates later," Lorraine said, sending Ouyang Nian away.
"I'm going first, hurry up." Ouyang Nian didn't care about Lorraine's act of sending her away. After all, those who survive long in the apocalypse all have some secrets that cannot be known to outsiders.
Lorraine opened the intelligence panel, where some changes had occurred regarding the docks.
[1. Refresh countdown: 10 hours 24 minutes]
2. There is a small marine gas turbine in the northern part of the industrial zone.
3. There is a small dock in the eastern part of the industrial zone, with a converted sand transport vessel.
[4. Refresh countdown: 11 hours 38 minutes]
"They're feeding us right up to the bottom!" Lorraine exclaimed. "But when was this ship modified?" Lorraine scratched his head, somewhat puzzled.
"Are you done yet? The armor-piercing shell is so heavy, come and help me right now!" Ouyang Nian roared from outside the cockpit.
"Alright, alright, I'm coming." Lorraine hurriedly rushed over.
"Seriously, after you carry this over, see if that greatsword is easy to remove. If not, just smash it. Remember to wear gloves so you don't get hurt."
With a clatter, the ammunition box hit the ground. Lorraine said, "Alright, I'll go right now. Thanks for your concern." Then he picked up a large hammer and walked over.
Lorraine looked at the tattered greatsword on the foredeck, which looked like it could shatter at any moment, and thought for a moment, "Just smash it. Who knows if it will break into pieces when you try to pull it out?"
Lorraine swung his sledgehammer and smashed the thing to pieces in no time.
"Holy crap, this dried right through my armor plate!"
Ouyang Nian, who had just finished loading ammunition, also came over and said, "The armor plates were installed just in time, otherwise we might already be feeding the fish in the water."
"Should we remove the panel and replace it with a new one?" Lorraine asked. "If we do it now, we'll probably have to turn on the lights, how should I put it?"
"Never mind, this is probably damage to the deck. Let's rest first and see how it goes tomorrow." Ouyang Nian gestured to the sword mark.
"Alright. Tengu, come here." Lorraine returned to the warehouse, retrieved 7.62mm ammunition and 40mm grenades, and replenished Tengu's ammunition to full capacity. "You guys will be on night watch."
"Package complete, eliminate all invading enemies."
"Well done." Lorraine rubbed the metal dog head of Diting. Then he turned and went back to his cabin, drifting off to sleep.
The hellish arena, filled with smoke and blood, did not attract any zombies; the ground remained silent under the cover of night.
"Buzz," Lorraine was woken up by the alarm clock on the data panel as usual. After brushing her teeth, Lorraine went to the deck with a loaf of bread for breakfast in her mouth.
"Ugh," Lorraine stretched and groaned comfortably as she faced the sun.
"Please move aside, you're blocking the sun." Ouyang Nian patted Lorraine with his tail.
Lorraine stepped aside and stood next to Ouyang Nian. "We haven't explored the northern part of this industrial area yet, and there's still a part in the east that we haven't been to. We'll probably have to clean up these remains."
"Did you have to bring this up now?" Ouyang Nian asked, his face falling.
"Okay, it's my fault. The problem now is, how do we get all these things together?"
"I remember there were a few excavators parked in the warehouse next to those survivors."
"Let's go then. Taking Di Ting should be enough, since quite a few zombies died yesterday."
The two men took their pistols and went down to the small boat, caught Di Ting who jumped off the gunboat, and rowed the small boat back to the shore.
