Chapter 187 Su Wanrong's Joy
Chapter 187 Su Wanrong's Joy
After years of suffering, the grievances were finally released, and the joy of seeing his second uncle, whom he hadn't seen for many years, filled his heart.
The lingering sadness was gently dispelled by Lin Zhou's soft cough.
Su Wanrong then realized that she had lost her composure and hurriedly wiped away the tears that were still wet from the corners of her eyes, her face still damp.
When she looked up at Lin Zhou and Su Wanqing behind her second uncle, her face showed a hint of awkwardness, and she forced a smile as she said:
"Look at my memory, I was so focused on feeling unwell. Come inside and sit down, it's very hot outside."
As she spoke, she stepped aside to make way for the passage, gestured with her hand, and pushed open the door. The small space was spotless, showing the owner's care.
This was originally a one-bedroom apartment, but a small bedroom was simply partitioned off with wooden boards. Several yellowed newspapers were pasted on the partition, and a portrait of a great man was hanging on the newspaper. The corners were carefully pressed flat, adding a touch of color to this simple space.
There was a solid wood square table in the living room, surrounded by four bamboo chairs. The chair surfaces were worn smooth and shiny, clearly old furniture that had been used for many years.
In the corner stood a four-door wooden cabinet, the glass inlaid on the cabinet doors was polished to a shine, porcelain bowls and glasses were placed on top, and tomatoes, potatoes and green vegetables were placed below, all arranged neatly.
"Our home is small, please make yourselves uncomfortable sitting here."
As Su Wanrong spoke, she quickly walked to the square table, picked up the rag draped over the back of the chair, and carefully wiped the tabletop and chair twice.
Su Guohua quickly waved his hand, telling his niece not to be so polite and to sit down and have a proper talk. Su Wanrong, however, ignored him and continued to do as she pleased.
Su Wanqing helped Su Guohua to sit down in a chair further inside, and then sat down next to her father. Lin Xiaofeng stood obediently beside Su Wanqing.
Before anyone could say anything after wiping it, Su Wanrong hurriedly went to another corner of the living room, where an old fan stood. The iron blades were spotless, suggesting that it was wiped clean regularly.
The fan is covered by a beige knitted dust cover with fine stitches and a small floral pattern around the edge, showing that it was hand-knitted with care.
She carefully lifted the dust cover, folded it neatly, and placed it on a small stool to the side. She then turned on the fan, pointing it towards everyone. With a soft "hum," the fan slowly began to rotate, bringing a cool breeze that dispelled the heat in the room.
"It's hot, a breeze will make you feel cooler."
As Su Wanrong spoke, she turned and walked to the cabinet. She took out several glasses, washed them with water, poured warm water from a thermos, and carried them to the table, placing them one by one in front of everyone, saying somewhat apologetically:
"There's not much good tea at home, so I'll just have some warm water to quench my thirst."
After doing all this, she finally breathed a sigh of relief, pulled over a chair, and sat down gently opposite Su Guohua. Her fingers unconsciously twisted the hem of her clothes, and there was still a hint of restraint in her eyes.
Su Guohua looked at his niece, who was busy running around, with heartache in his eyes. After calming down, he introduced the two sides: "Wanrong, this is your cousin Su Wanqing, this is your brother-in-law Lin Zhou, and this is your nephew Xiaofeng."
Su Wanrong quickly looked up at Su Wanqing and Lin Zhou, a genuine smile on her face, and greeted them with a smile:
"Hello, sister and brother-in-law." Her voice was warm and generous, with a touch of the straightforwardness typical of Northeasterners. She then looked at Lin Xiaofeng beside her, smiled and nodded, "Hello, Xiaofeng too."
Su Wanqing looked at her cousin, who was a few years older than her but appeared to be more than ten years older, and a ripple of emotion stirred within her. She quickly waved her hand and said:
"Big sister, we're all family, no need to be so polite."
Lin Zhou nodded in agreement, saying, "Yes! Please sit down, eldest sister. We're family now, no need to be so polite."
Lin Xiaofeng also called out, "Hello, Auntie." The boy's clear voice eased Su Wanrong's initial awkwardness, and she smiled in response, her smile becoming much more genuine.
They had only exchanged a few words when Su Wanrong seemed to suddenly remember something, patted her forehead, and stood up, saying:
"Look at me, there's a child inside. I'll go and call him out so he can meet you."
As she spoke, she quickly walked towards the small bedroom partitioned off by wooden planks, gently knocked on the partition door, and said in a soft voice:
"Come out for a bit during the National Day holiday, we have guests at home."
A series of dragging footsteps came from inside the house, followed by the boy's somewhat reluctant muttering:
"Mom, I'm doing my homework, what guest is this...?"
Before he could finish speaking, the partition door was pulled open, and a boy of about thirteen or fourteen years old peeked out.
He wasn't very tall, and was rather thin. His features resembled Su Wanrong's, with a straight nose and well-defined lips. However, his face carried a youthful innocence and shyness, and his wispy hairs hung down slightly, partially obscuring his eyes and brows.
The boy was initially a little impatient, but when he looked up and saw the strangers sitting in the living room, he was stunned. His reluctance vanished instantly, his cheeks flushed slightly, and he didn't know what to do with his hands and feet. He subconsciously shrank back, wanting to hide back inside.
"Don't be shy, child! These are all our relatives."
Su Wanrong gently tugged at his arm, led him into the living room, pressed his shoulders to make him stand in front of everyone, and then introduced them one by one.
She first pointed to Su Guohua, her voice gentle: "Guoqing, this is your second grandfather, quickly greet him."
The boy pursed his lips, looked up at Su Guohua with a mixture of curiosity and shyness in his eyes, and whispered, "Second Grandfather."
Looking at the boy in front of him, Su Guohua could vaguely see the shadow of his older brother in his features. His heart softened, and he quickly responded. He raised his hand to pat the boy's head, but was afraid of scaring the child, so he just nodded gently, his eyes full of smiles: "Ah, good boy."
Su Wanrong then pointed to Su Wanqing and Lin Zhou and continued to introduce them: "This is your aunt, and this is your uncle."
The boy's gaze fell on Su Wanqing and Lin Zhou, his cheeks flushed even more, and his voice was barely audible, yet he still earnestly called out, "Auntie, Uncle."
Su Wanqing looked at the shy child and felt a surge of affection for him. She quickly smiled and replied, "Okay, okay." Lin Zhou also smiled gently and nodded at him.
Finally, Su Wanrong pointed to Lin Xiaofeng and said, "This is your cousin, Lin Xiaofeng. You two can get along well in the future."
Upon seeing this, Lin Xiaofeng quickly stood up and smiled at Wang Guoqing: "Hello, Brother Guoqing."
Wang Guoqing looked up at Lin Xiaofeng, and seeing that he had taken the initiative to greet him, his shyness lessened a bit, and he replied softly, "Hello."
After saying that, she lowered her head, staring at the tips of her shoes, her fingers unconsciously picking at the hem of her clothes, her ears turning bright red, looking embarrassed.
Looking at her son's expression, Su Wanrong smiled helplessly and gently patted his back: "This child is just too introverted. He gets shy around strangers." As she spoke, she pulled over a chair and made Wang Guoqing sit down next to her. "Sit down quickly, don't just stand there."
Wang Guoqing sat down as instructed, but his posture remained upright, with his hands neatly placed on his knees and his eyes fixed on the table, not daring to look up casually.
The fan whirred slowly, sending in gentle breezes that dispelled the heat in the room and eased the initial awkwardness.
