Chapter 36 The Descent of the Gods, the Kingdom of God
Chapter 36 The Descent of the Gods, the Kingdom of God
Inside the Hive base, the lights were a stark white, and the air was filled with a strange stench of disinfectant mixed with the smell of blood.
The group, guns in hand, advanced step by step.
The laboratories along the way were all enclosed by glass, and corpses floated inside.
At first, some people in the group thought that the rumors about Umbrella were just exaggerations, but when they actually saw what was behind the glass, everyone's expression changed.
The corpses contained not only adult men and women.
There are also children, the elderly, and even animals.
This is a slaughterhouse that uses living people as raw materials.
No one in the group spoke anymore; even their breathing became much quieter.
The leader, who was walking at the front, suddenly raised his hand.
"stop."
Everyone immediately stopped.
He stared at the narrow passage ahead, his voice low.
"There's a problem here; there might be an embassy or police."
After saying that, he checked the firearms once and then cautiously probed forward.
The next instant, a piercing buzzing sound suddenly rang out in the passage.
hum!
The infrared laser swept across him almost at his waist, moving at an astonishing speed; it was just a hair's breadth away from slicing him in two.
The team leader was clearly not new to dealing with this kind of situation; he immediately dropped to the ground and narrowly avoided the attack.
Then came the second and third rounds.
He kept rolling, crouching, and dodging, and finally managed to cross the laser zone safely and reach the other side.
"See that?" he shouted to the crowd, turning around. "There's a pattern, remember the rhythm, it's not that..."
Before he could finish speaking, he noticed that everyone's expression had changed.
Alice's face turned pale, and she suddenly roared at him:
"Be careful!"
The team leader turned around instinctively.
This time, the entire passageway was lit up.
The dense array of lasers crisscrossed like a net of light that instantly closed in, sealing off everything in all directions, leaving no way out.
The team leader stood still, staring at the approaching red light curtain. His face froze for a moment, then a helpless smile appeared on his face.
"Oh, damn it..."
The next second, the laser passed right through his body.
His body was sliced into several pieces almost in the blink of an eye, with blood, flesh, and fragments scattered all over the ground, a scene so gruesome it sent chills down one's spine.
The people behind were all stunned.
In a mere instant, a living person was gone.
The remaining men dared not be careless in the slightest and could only grit their teeth and continue to forge ahead. Along the way, they lost several more men before finally reaching the Red Queen's main control terminal.
Inside the control room, the screen flickered intermittently.
After a few crackling sounds of electricity, a virtual projection resembling a little girl slowly appeared.
She was wearing a red dress, her face was pale, but her expression was cold and indifferent.
"You shouldn't be here."
Her voice was mechanical and calm, devoid of any emotion.
"As per procedure, I have eliminated all life forms in the laboratory."
"You've malfunctioned," someone shouted at her. "We'll shut you down forcibly and find out what happened."
Alice, gun in hand, slowly approached the central device while surveying the control room.
The Red Queen is just artificial intelligence; she won't pounce on people and bite them on her own. But no one can guarantee that she can't control other things.
As the control program was activated, various mechanisms in the main control room began to shut down, and the image of the Red Queen flickered violently.
"Stop." The Red Queen stared at them, her voice rising and falling for the first time. "You are causing a disaster."
"You are the one who caused this disaster!"
Almost at that moment, a muffled thud came from the side.
A figure suddenly leaped out of the shadows and crashed straight into the nearest team member.
When the light shone on it, everyone could see what the thing looked like.
Half of his head collapsed, one eyeball hung forlornly on the side of his face, his mouth was torn, and his other eye was nowhere to be found.
It was still wearing the lab worker's clothes, but its chest was already rotten beyond recognition.
The nearest team member froze in fear, his finger on the trigger, momentarily forgetting to fire.
boom!
The person next to him fired first.
The bullet pierced the monster's chest, flesh and blood exploded, and the enormous impact sent it flying.
But an even more terrifying scene followed.
That thing wasn't dead at all.
It lay on the ground, its hands still desperately clawing forward, dragging its bloodied body toward the crowd, letting out a low growl like a wild beast.
Boom!
Alice reacted the fastest, firing two shots in quick succession.
This time, she smashed the monster's head, and it finally stopped moving.
Before everyone could catch their breath, an even more piercing roar came from the end of the corridor.
Ugh!
Several humanoid monsters, crawling on all fours, suddenly rushed out.
They have no skin; their entire bodies are bare red muscles, with their brains and hearts exposed on the surface. Their claws are long and sharp, yet their movements are incredibly fast.
The most terrifying thing was that ridiculously long and thin tongue, which made a whistling sound when it was flicked out, like an iron hook that could pierce a person's chest at any moment.
"Fire!"
This time, no one was stunned anymore.
Gunfire erupted instantly at the entrance to the control room.
Having learned their lesson, everyone fired desperately at the heads and chests, but these monsters were far more resilient than the previous "corpses."
Once the bullets hit, they can't be stopped unless they hit a vital spot.
What's even more frightening is that there are more than just a few of them.
One after another, they crawled towards us from the corridor, the corner, and the back passage. From a distance, they looked like a dark, dense mass, like a swarm of fleshy spiders swooping down from the ground.
"Close the door! Close the door now!"
Everyone worked with all their might to pull the heavy alloy door down.
boom!
The gate finally closed, temporarily isolating the monsters.
But this does not mean it is safe.
boom! boom! boom!
A continuous series of banging sounds came from outside the door. The Licker was frantically smashing the alloy door and glass observation window with its body, claws and tongue, making the entire control room tremble.
Blood and bits of flesh smeared onto the glass, making one's stomach churn.
Faint cracks have already begun to appear on the glass.
It was completely blocked off from all sides, becoming a true isolated island.
Despair, like a tide, slowly washed over everyone's hearts.
Alice leaned against the wall, and memories began to surface in her mind.
She finally remembered.
She realized she wasn't a loyal follower of the protection umbrella at all, but rather on the side against it. She also thought of someone in the team who was the real culprit behind the virus leak.
But right now, none of that matters anymore.
The lickers outside are still banging on the door.
Bang bang bang!
The cracks are increasing.
With their current firepower, they simply can't withstand so many monsters rushing in. Once the door breaks down, they'll be torn to shreds by those things.
Alice looked up at the Red Queen.
"So, that's why you sealed off the base?"
The Red Queen resumed her cold and calm demeanor.
"Yes."
"After the virus leaked from the lab, according to procedure, I had to seal off the hive and release nerve gas to eliminate all living organisms and stop the virus from spreading."
"You're the ones who interrupted all of this."
Another team member asked in a hoarse voice:
"Is there any way for us to get out of here alive?"
"have."
The Red Queen answered without hesitation.
The next second, lines of data began to appear on the screen.
"Experimental subject code name: Licker."
"Height: 2 meters. Weight: 120 kilograms. Completely blind, with heightened hearing. Tongue capable of piercing a human body, and claws capable of leaving clear marks on concrete surfaces."
She spoke as calmly as if she were reporting the weather.
Strength assessment: five to ten tons.
Everyone in the control room fell silent.
The Red Queen added another sentence:
"With your current firepower, you are not enough to deal with the current number of Lickers. Even a normal human being cannot withstand them head-on."
Overall survival probability: 0.0000001.
Alice smiled humorously upon hearing this:
"There's still this much? I thought it would be zero."
The Queen looked at her, her tone still devoid of any emotion.
"That was a miracle."
"If you wish, you can begin praying to God now."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than the glass finally gave way.
boom!
The entire pane of glass shattered with a deafening roar.
The Lickers swarmed in, their roars, the sound of shattering glass, and the crunching of flesh filling the control room. Death was within reach at that moment.
For some reason, a voice suddenly flashed through Alice's mind.
"The end is nigh, and the dead will rise again."
That's what Huang Bai said on TV.
She looked down and saw the two lucky charms she had casually stuffed into her pocket. Could lucky charms really bring good luck?
Someone nearby had already completely given up; their lips were trembling, and they started praying incoherently.
"God... if you truly exist, please save us..."
"Please...save us..."
Perhaps it is despair that forces people to grasp at every possibility.
Perhaps there really is a sliver of a miracle.
The next moment, a golden light suddenly shone on one side of the control room wall.
Then, the most unbelievable scene unfolded.
A figure gleaming with golden light forcefully passed through the wall and entered.
It didn't look like a human in action at all; it was more like some kind of being that didn't belong to reality had broken in from another dimension.
Several golden rays followed closely behind him, but the most terrifying of all was the sudden burst of lightning.
boom!!
Golden light and azure lightning struck simultaneously. The Lickers that had just rushed in didn't even have time to scream before their bodies were instantly blasted apart, with pieces of flesh and blood flying everywhere, and even the ground was scorched black.
The lightning had not yet dissipated, and the thunder still echoed in the control room.
Everyone stared blankly ahead, almost forgetting to breathe.
The newcomer's long hair moved without wind, and his eyes had a faint emerald green hue, like cold jade in a deep lake, or like a cold fire that never goes out in the night.
That power, that posture, that way of making an entrance that couldn't be explained by common sense, completely shattered everyone's understanding.
At that moment, everyone had only one thought in their minds.
God descended, bringing with him His kingdom.
(Sorry, I went to visit the graves today, so I only have time now.)
