Chapter 318 Repairing a Monocular
"This villa is indeed nice, but—it's a bit too big for one person."
After signing the house sale contract, Mr. Miller Carter moved out of the villa without any hesitation. In fact, he had already moved most of his belongings out beforehand, just waiting to sell the house as soon as possible and leave Backlund, this place of heartbreak.
"Although we have a house, such a big place can't just be occupied by me alone—" Lorne rubbed his temples, as practical problems came one after another.
"People in high society definitely need some servants, and even a professional butler to help them manage their daily affairs."
"Sigh—" Lorne still felt a headache about this issue.
On the one hand, hiring servants and a butler would be a considerable and ongoing expense. On the other hand, he had grown accustomed to living alone. It was more comfortable and carefree, perhaps with the addition of a cat. Servants and a butler would only restrict his freedom.
"The renovation of this villa will continue, but without supervision, the construction period will likely be delayed for a long time."
Miller Carter used to have his own servants oversee the work. Lorne, however, has none. Besides, he's been busy lately with the integration of various factories and Sharon's occult courses—it's simply impossible for him to personally oversee every aspect of the house renovation.
"Should we—find a group of servants?" Lorne fell into deep thought.
"No, there's really no need to find a large group of people. Just find one or two reliable people to help manage it, or perhaps—"
A thought suddenly flashed through his mind: "If only there were a group of people who wouldn't get tired from working, didn't need wages, and were absolutely tight-lipped!"—Wait!
Lorne's eyes lit up; he remembered a guy who liked to play poker with zombies.
Brave Ones Bar.
"So, you came to find me." Marich, dressed in a black vest and with a gloomy demeanor, looked at Lorne with a rather strange expression. "Yes." Lorne nodded frankly.
He didn't actually come here specifically to find him. He just happened to pass by on his way to the factory, so he stopped by to take a look.
"Uh—" Marich hadn't expected Lorne to seek his help on this matter. Having zombies do renovation supervision and moving work? That was certainly a bizarre idea.
"By the way, what about the Indulgence Faction?" Lorne didn't dwell on that topic and instead asked about the important matter first. He remembered that some time ago, Marich had mentioned that some powerful members of the Indulgence Faction might come to Backlund to cause trouble for them. "Fortunately. They did come, but they didn't find us," Marich said succinctly.
-
"Sharon's previous arrangements have worked; the indulgents found nothing in the city and should have left Backlund by now."
"Hmm, not bad." Lorne nodded.
This inadvertently reduced his own troubles. If Sharon and the others were truly in danger, he certainly wouldn't stand idly by. "Is there any other new information you can share?"
Marich pondered for a moment, then asked in return, "Do you remember the Quaternary noble tomb I told you about before?"
"The one from the Amon family?"
"Hmm." Marich nodded slightly. "I participated in an exploration of that tomb, along with several other people from the same gathering."
"Uh—I remember you said that the tomb was quite dangerous—" Lorne was somewhat surprised; Marich didn't seem like someone who would take risks easily.
"Yes, it is indeed very dangerous," Marich affirmed. "So, we only briefly explored the outer area. We never considered the middle and inner layers from the beginning."
I see. If it doesn't involve the core of the tomb, the danger level should still be within a controllable range. After all, Marich is a seasoned Sequence 6 veteran with extensive experience.
"Did you gain anything?" Lorne asked curiously.
"Nothing particularly special. We found some corpses of previous explorers and some Quaternary artifacts." Marich paused, then added, "The most special find, I did obtain an extraordinary property."
"characteristic?"
"Hmm, a 'thief' trait."
"The thief"—Lorne suddenly became interested. He thought of his damaged monocle.
"Did you find anything else around that characteristic? For example—some worm-like things?"
"A worm—" Marich shook his head. "No, I didn't see one. It's possible it existed but I didn't notice it, since we were focused on the potential danger at the time."
After a moment of contemplation, Lorne looked up and asked, "Could you sell me that trait?"
"I might need to use it in some of my experiments."
"Yes," Marich replied without hesitation.
This trait itself wasn't of much use to him, and since the other party had asked, he had no reason to refuse. Besides, extraordinary traits don't have a long "shelf life," and he was already wondering what to do with it.
Because of their friendship, Marich eventually sold the property to Lorne for the low price of £250.
After the transaction was completed, Marich went into the cubicle, took out a black tin box, and handed it to Lorne.
Lorne took it and opened it. Inside, there lay a semi-transparent, black, finger-shaped substance.
His spiritual intuition was correct—he carefully put the tin box away and placed it in his pocket.
The two chatted about the same topic for a while, and Marich reluctantly agreed to help "supervise" the construction of Lorne's new villa when he had some free time, and also do some security and moving work. Before leaving, Lorne seemed to remember something and asked, half-jokingly and half-seriously, "By the way, would you be interested in being my butler?"
He discovered that Marich was perfectly suited for the job of butler. With those "living corpses" around, he could handle all the butler and servants' work by himself.
Of course, having "zombies" as servants has a horror movie feel to it, but Lorne himself doesn't care; pragmatism comes first.
"Uh—I'm not really interested in being a butler."
"That's such a pity."
Inside the office.
Lorne sealed the place with a spiritual wall, then took out the broken monocle and the withered "Time Worm".
Then, he carefully opened the tin box. Inside lay the finger-shaped "Thief" attribute.
If nothing is found, I'll find a way to sell it. Anyway, with the "portable space" to keep it fresh, I won't lose out no matter what—he thought to himself.
"As expected—there was a reaction!"
Lorne could clearly feel a mutual attraction between the monocle and the "thief" characteristic, like the two poles of a magnet.
"These are definitely from the same source. Could it be that the law of aggregation is at work?"
This monocle is definitely much higher in rank than Sequence 9.
Just as Lorne was pondering, the monocle beside his palm suddenly trembled violently, slipped from his hand, and fell straight into the open tin box below with a soft "snap," landing right on the "severed finger" feature.
Oops!
A wisp of very faint white smoke rose from the tin box and quickly dissipated. After the smoke cleared, only the monocle remained in the tin box; the "thief" characteristic had vanished.
"Could it be—that its extraordinary properties were absorbed into it?"
After repeatedly confirming that his spiritual intuition had not given any warning and that there was nothing unusual in his surroundings, he carefully reached out, picked up the monocle again, and examined it closely.
The monocle is still the same monocle—there's no obvious change.
Apart from----
"Some of the cracks on it have disappeared!" Lorne suddenly noticed this detail.
The spiderweb-like cracks on the lens have visibly disappeared, becoming less dense!
"Could it be that—it can utilize the properties of the same pathway to perform self-repair?!"
