Chapter 87 is terrifying!
The search team rushed towards the dormitory building first.
Kawaguchi Masanami's dormitory is located on the first floor near the entrance, where a half-finished cup of coffee remains on a small square table.
The search team pushed open the door and quickly dragged an old wooden box from under the bed. Inside, they found several capacitors, a piece of copper wire, and half a circuit board.
It was the scattered parts of the transmitter that Yan Shuo had put in beforehand. They were mixed haphazardly among the old things, seemingly discarded at random, but their purpose could be clearly identified.
"Report! Suspicious parts found in Lieutenant Kawaguchi's barracks, suspected to be radio transmitter components!" a soldier reported loudly, holding up a wooden crate.
Kawaguchi Masanami's face turned deathly pale instantly, and he staggered forward, shouting, "Impossible! This isn't mine! Someone framed me!"
He reached out to grab it, but was held down by two soldiers. In the struggle, one of the buttons on his collar popped off, and his usual arrogance vanished.
Meanwhile, the team searching Fujii Yuta's dormitory also made a "harvest".
The door to dormitory 209 was kicked open, and the soldiers ransacked the place, finding several Chinese and Russian books with worn covers and faint fingerprints on the pages.
A soldier pulled out several pieces of paper, mostly burned, from a trash can in the corner. The edges were charred, and the remaining parts still vaguely showed Chinese characters such as "contact" and "time".
"Lieutenant Fujii, how do you explain these things?" Kobayashi Kaoru walked up to Fujii Yuta and threw the book and scraps of paper at his feet.
Yuta Fujii's forehead was beaded with cold sweat, his eyes darting around: "The book... I bought the book on the black market, I was just looking at it out of curiosity! I don't know what the scrap of paper is, it's not mine!"
"Don't know?" Kaoru Kobayashi sneered, her eyes sharp as knives. "You found books written in an enemy language and burnt paper scraps that looked like encrypted intelligence in your dormitory, and now you say you don't know?"
He turned to the officer beside him and ordered, "Take these two away and interrogate them separately!"
After dealing with Kawaguchi and Fujii, Kobayashi Kaoru's gaze swept across the crowd again, and he said in a deep voice, "Start with the Telecommunications Division, continue the screening and interrogation! Tanaka Mihisa!"
Upon hearing her name, Tanaka Mihisa trembled violently, and her eyes were already red when she looked up.
Two soldiers stepped forward, their voices icy: "Tanaka Mihisa, come with us!"
Inside the interrogation room, the interrogator, Sasaki, was a middle-aged man with a face full of fat. His small eyes scanned Tanaka Miku back and forth, his gaze fixed on her slender neck and flushed cheeks, revealing an undisguised lewdness.
The young recorder next to him kept glancing over, a sly smile on his face.
"Tanaka Mihisa, did you receive the coded telegram at 10:10 a.m.?" Sasaki tapped the table, his voice hoarse, but his eyes never left Tanaka's face.
Tanaka Miku timidly looked up, tears welling in her eyes, her voice barely audible: "Yes...yes, Commander Sasaki...I'm the one who received him..."
She tilted her head slightly, her wet eyelashes trembling gently, just like a little rabbit soaked by the rain.
"Oh?" Sasaki leaned forward, his breathing heavy. "You memorized the contents of the secret telegram? Did you leak it?" His hand rested on the table, his fingers tapping restlessly, his eyes becoming increasingly blatant.
"No! I didn't!" Tanaka Miku shook her head violently, tears streaming down her face, her shoulders trembling slightly. "I reported it immediately after receiving it, with several colleagues watching. How could I dare to leak it... Sir, I really didn't..."
"No leak?" Sasaki suddenly slammed his hand on the table, his voice rising sharply. "The entire Special Higher Police are investigating who leaked the information. Who else could it be but you?! Tell me honestly, do you have any connections with Chongqing?" As he spoke, he reached out to touch Tanaka's cheek.
"Ah!..." Tanaka Miku shrank back in fright, curling up in her chair, clutching her arms tightly, and cried even harder, "Sir, please don't... I really didn't know... I'm just an ordinary telegraph operator..."
Her cries were soft and delicate, full of grievance, and anyone who heard them would inevitably feel pity.
The recorder next to him stared wide-eyed, unconsciously swallowing hard.
Just then, the interrogation room door was pushed open, and Kobayashi Kaoru walked in.
He immediately spotted Tanaka Miku, who was huddled in a chair and sobbing, and Sasaki's hand that was about to touch Tanaka. His face instantly darkened.
"Sasaki, what are you doing?"
Sasaki was startled and quickly withdrew his hand, forcing a sheepish smile. "Section Chief Kobayashi, I was interrogating Tanaka Mihisa, but she wouldn't confess..."
Kaoru Kobayashi ignored him and walked straight to Miku Tanaka. Seeing her red and swollen eyes and pale face, he felt a pang of pain in his heart.
"Tanaka, don't be afraid. Tell me honestly, did you leak the secret telegram from this morning?" His tone softened considerably, even carrying a hint of barely perceptible gentleness.
Tanaka Miku raised her tear-streaked face and saw Kobayashi Kaoru. As if grasping at a lifeline, she sobbed, "Section Chief Kobayashi... I really didn't... I reported it as soon as I received it... They even scared me..." As she spoke, her breathing suddenly became rapid, her chest heaved violently, her face turned even paler than before, and her eyes began to glaze over.
"Tanaka? What's wrong with you?" Kobayashi Kaoru frowned and was about to reach out to help her when Tanaka Miku suddenly went limp and slid off the chair, completely losing consciousness. Her breathing was heavy and rapid; the "sedative" had taken effect.
"Oh no!" Kobayashi Kaoru's heart skipped a beat. She quickly bent down and picked up Tanaka Miku, her eyes filled with anxiety and heartache. She roared at Sasaki, "Look how scared you've made her! If anything happens to her, I'll never forgive you!"
Sasaki trembled from the shout and dared not utter a sound.
Kaoru Kobayashi carried the frail Tanaka Miku in his arms and strode toward the infirmary. The person in his arms was like a feather that could break at any moment, making his heart beat erratically.
In the corner, Yan Shuo, disguised as Kobayashi Kichiemon, took in everything, a hint of a smile flashing in his eyes.
Tanaka Mihisa passed the test smoothly, while Kawaguchi and Fujii were framed and eliminated, bringing this round of planning to a perfect conclusion.
After Kobayashi Kaoru carried Tanaka Miku away, the interrogation and screening continued.
The members of the Telecommunications Division were called into the interrogation room one by one, and Mina Shimizu, Ayako Sato, Haruko Watanabe, Ryoichi Matsumoto, and others were questioned in turn.
The people summoned all looked flustered. When questioned by the interrogator, they either stammered and couldn't explain clearly, or repeatedly emphasized their innocence.
Matsumoto Ryoichi was so frightened that his legs went weak. He kept repeating, "I didn't know about the leak. Ms. Tanaka and I are just ordinary colleagues." The interrogator asked them for a long time but couldn't get any useful information or find any suspicious evidence. So he could only release them temporarily and mark them as "under observation."
After the telecommunications department finished screening everyone, it was finally Kobayashi Kichiemon's turn in the "unrelated personnel" line.
"Kobayashi Kichiemon!" came the soldier's shout.
Yan Shuo responded and slowly walked out, his face showing the restraint befitting a corporal. "Sir, what's the matter?"
"Come with me, the section chief wants to see you," the soldier said calmly.
