Chapter 181 S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters
Peter and Harry communicated via text message and learned the details of Peter's dinner at Adrian's house, as well as that Adrian seemed to have some entanglement with Osborn Technologies. But at least for now, Adrian didn't seem to be in any danger. The vulture's wings had been developed, and Peter asked Harry to keep an eye on them. Harry, who was very interested in those wings, naturally agreed without hesitation.
Of course, Harry never expected that his future father-in-law might turn into a supervillain, and that his current target was actually his own father.
Peter put away his phone and looked towards the Quinjet that had landed atop Avengers Tower in the distance. The rear hatch opened, and Peter stepped inside; Cindy was already waiting. Today was Sunday, the day they were supposed to go to the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in Washington.
The Tri-Flying Tower, located on Theodore Roosevelt Island in the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., is the only publicly known base of S.H.I.E.L.D. This is a rather unusual location, considering that S.H.I.E.L.D. is actually a United Nations agency, but its headquarters are not in New York, but in Washington, D.C., demonstrating the extent of the U.S. government's control over S.H.I.E.L.D.
This also reflects, to some extent, the extent of Hydra's infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D.
"I really wish this was my only job today, taking two energetic high school students with superpowers on a picnic. That kind of life suits me better."
Hawkeye Clint Barton was in charge of transporting them. He complained helplessly, hoping to lighten the mood a bit. After all, Cindy, as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, was a quiet girl, making the last few minutes very awkward.
Hopefully Spider-Man can be a bit more talkative.
Peter walked over to Hawkeye and sat down in the passenger seat without any hesitation.
"Really? The Thunder's special forces are that relaxed?"
"Hard to say, but nothing much has happened these past few days." Finally having someone to talk to, Hawkeye was able to relieve his boredom. As he piloted the plane, he said, "Ever since you and your weirdo friends blew up the base under the Hudson River, the world seems to have become quiet."
In fact, the problems at that experimental base were far greater than they appeared. Nick Fury entrusted the New York situation to Spider-Man because S.H.I.E.L.D. had many more pressing issues to address. Unexpectedly, Spider-Man unearthed a whole Hydra hideout: an entire security company, a whole experimental system, alien creatures hidden by the US military, and the completed Erkins serum.
Of course, there's also the discovered Doctor Octopus, Otto Octavia, who is now openly a wanted criminal for illegal human experimentation. However, this may only be on the surface, and the US military probably won't hand him over.
"Fury was kicking himself. Believe me, his face was completely black when the Level 8 agents were having their meeting that day."
Level 8 agents are the absolute highest-ranking members of S.H.I.E.L.D., with only leaders of various divisions and departments holding Level 8 agent privileges. They are considered the true backbone of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson was promoted to Level 8 after receiving the mission to form the Bus Team following the Battle of New York, while Hawkeye only acquired Level 8 privileges after becoming the leader of the Thunderbolts.
However, Peter was more concerned about another issue.
"Nick Fury's face turned black?"
"Darker than usual."
Barton chuckled, while Peter, sitting in the passenger seat, asked another question that had been on his mind: "Where's Rhino? Has he joined the Thunder?"
"No, probably. We couldn't convince him. Can you imagine? Neither Cortana nor the psychology experts at S.H.I.E.L.D. could persuade him. He lives in his own world, with his own set of logic. You either have to agree with his logic, or you simply can't communicate with him. But overall, he's not a bad person, just a bit strange."
With the Quinjet flying at supersonic speed, Washington soon came into view. The Three Towers were getting closer and closer. Before landing, Hawkeye gave a special reminder: "Although you probably won't do it, I still suggest you don't take off your mask."
"I definitely won't, but is there any explanation?"
"Just like those idiots at the Pentagon created the American Avengers, many at S.H.I.E.L.D. also believe that it was a huge mistake for the Avengers program, proposed by Director Fury, to eventually break away from S.H.I.E.L.D. They desperately want to know all the information about the Avengers and how to deal with you." Hawkeye said as he piloted the Quinjet to its descent. "So remember this: not everyone at S.H.I.E.L.D. is a friend."
It's more accurate to say that S.H.I.E.L.D. has a whole host of enemies. Peter muttered to himself, then watched as the rear hatch opened. No one greeted them outside, but Cindy stood up and looked at Peter: "I'll take you to Fury."
"Have you been here before?"
"I've been here a few times before for training, so I know the way."
If there was anything unusual about the journey, it was the curious glances from passersby. Most S.H.I.E.L.D. agents showed very obvious "curiosity" about Spider-Man's existence, and Peter's spider-sense would frequently kick in, allowing him to sense that many people harbored a certain degree of malice towards him. Of course, most people's malice wasn't great; they seemed to be just thinking about how to deal with Spider-Man if they encountered him.
Peter didn't care much. He took the elevator, which might be the future captain's way of jumping out of the window, and went all the way to Nick Fury's office on the top floor. Cindy opened the office with her iris, and the two of them went in. They saw Nick Fury looking rather disheveled, with his legs on the desk, stuffing oranges into his mouth, and looking at documents.
"Hmm, you've arrived? How's the situation on the other side of the Hudson River?"
Peter asked, somewhat confused, "S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't know?"
"Without firsthand information, and without having Spider-Web agents with you," Nick Fury said, his legs propped up on the desk, looking at Peter. "You're carrying the alien...life that the Pentagon found in the Arizona desert?"
To be frank, Nick Fury didn't really think Peter's black clothes made him look like an "alien," while Peter scratched his head and decided to talk to Nick Fury about symbiotes first.
"Yes, I call it Venom. It didn't originally have a name."
How many of its own kind does the Pentagon have on hand?
Nick Fury quickly received a reply from Peter Parker.
"There are five in total. There are five of them from a planet called Klinta."
