Chapter 419 Quantum Virus
Spider-Man 2099 suppressed his unease and decided to prioritize the bigger picture by working together to analyze Superman's blood sample.
After all, Batman's evil intentions are a matter for the future, while if Superman were to be infected, there would be very few people on Earth who could truly stop him.
However, the analysis of Superman's blood sample did not go smoothly at first.
After seeing Superman's cellular structure, Reed's first reaction was simply to exclaim, "It's perfect!"
Superman's cells can react to any energy in any environment, absorbing external energy and then releasing the cell's own power. This power can even overflow, forming the biofield that usually surrounds Superman.
"Are all Kryptonians this extreme? Or is he just an exception?"
Reed's first thought was that he didn't believe Kryptonians were a naturally evolved species, especially Superman as an individual.
"Or is it that the ecological environment of their home planet is so harsh that they cannot survive without doing this?"
From an evolutionary perspective, while biological structures can be considered a massive code, every functional characteristic of every biological community that has evolved to the present day has its own reason for existence, and is closely related to their lifestyle and living environment.
What you perceive as a strength may become a weakness in a different environment, and vice versa.
Superman's cellular composition is completely illogical. His DNA structure follows the trajectory of normal evolution, but it doesn't seem like something that a normal ecosystem could evolve into.
There are many creatures that can survive by basking in the sun, but Reed is the first creature I've ever seen that can unleash the power of nuclear fusion from a mere beam of starlight with a power of less than ten watts.
During his observation, Reed found an anomaly inside the cell: "Is it that thing?"
A highly active cellular structure, ready to flexibly mutate according to the external environment, is very much in line with the characteristics of a zombie virus.
"No." Batman, a semi-Kryptonian biologist, immediately recognized the purpose of the cellular tissue: "This is part of Superman, don't touch it."
This is a cellular characteristic of Doomsday. Theoretically speaking, Batman really doesn't know if the consequences of this zombie virus spiraling out of control can match the severity of Doomsday.
"Don't touch it" is not advice, but a lesson learned. Doomsday's cellular tissue is extremely aggressive, and it doesn't need to go through the trouble of self-replication like the zombie virus.
They should perhaps be thankful that Superman had already survived the most extremely dangerous spore form of Doomsday.
Even if there is a zombie virus in its body, it is contained within, firmly locked around the superhuman's cells, and there is no possibility of releasing spores outward in the form of breathing or energy radiation.
Otherwise, with the combination of spores and zombie virus, there would be no need for biting; it could infect the entire Earth and even the universe at an exponential rate within a few days.
That's strange.
Reed, Batman, Iron Man, and Spider-Man 2099 huddled together on the holographic screen for a long time, scrutinizing it pixel by pixel, but they couldn't find anything abnormal.
Anyway, Superman's cells themselves don't have anything normal about them.
Superman remains unconscious, but the extracted cells are perfectly normal, which is clearly not normal.
"Because he was infected with a quantum virus."
Ganata, who had been chased out of the room to avoid causing trouble, slipped back in without anyone noticing. The barrier formed by the green light of the will of the Green Lantern was like air to her, a celestial infant detached from the material universe.
"Hmm~" Still suffering from low blood sugar, she couldn't help but yawn again, and carefully explained, "Does anyone among you need me to explain the point about 'observational results' in quantum theory?"
The experts present here should not be so confused as to not understand the significance of the act of "observation" in quantum theory.
In the quantum realm, all results only arise upon observation. Before observation, a result is a mixture of multiple eigenstates superimposed on each other. Only when it is actually observed does it become a definite result.
"So, according to you, we've essentially opened that box now."
Reed was confused about whether the zombie sentinels were carrying the virus he thought they were carrying, including the reason why Superman was unconscious. Was it just because they hadn't observed him before?
"Before this, were we essentially facing a 'Schrödinger's Superman'?"
Just like Schrödinger's cat, the life or death of a cat in a box cannot be determined until the box is opened and observed.
Before they took blood samples for observation, Superman was in a superposition of "infected" and "uninfected". Only after they took blood samples was the final result finally determined.
"So what's the result now?"
Faced with everyone's questions, Ganata simply grinned, revealing her two little fangs, and with a speed that caught everyone completely off guard, she bit down on Joey's neck on the hospital bed: "Ouch!"
She's a goddess; observations in the quantum realm are traditionally left to mortals. Now that the observations are complete and the results are confirmed, she can finally eat without restraint—click!
Aside from Batman, this was the first time these people had directly heard what the sound of a biofield breaking was like.
After a vampire-like feast, Ganata went from a near-comatose state of low blood sugar to a state of hyperglycemia and carbon monoxide poisoning. Feeling sleepy again, she simply sprawled out on Superman's bed, pulled the sheet over herself, and kicked Joey, the patient, off: "Goodnight, Makka Pakka!"
With a thud, Joey, still with her eyes closed, was slapped straight onto the floor, but showed no signs of waking up.
"Excuse my bluntness, but this doesn't look like anything's wrong."
Tony thought that even someone with a body of steel should be able to react completely when kicked off the bed, right?
Reed nodded; he had already begun considering what methods to use to observe the virus in the quantum realm.
Ganata simply waved her hand, ready to dismiss the assembled professional team, as if their only purpose was to collect a blood sample: "No one knows my livelihood better than me. No problem, leave it to me!"
The zombie virus did infect Joey, but that wasn't the main reason he was in a deep sleep. Besides, it wasn't really a long sleep; less than five hours had passed since the zombie sentinel exploded!
How long has it been since Superman last slept?
Galactus's question stumped everyone, including Batman: "Can't he just rest and have a good dream?"
That makes sense.
Reed, who was new to the area, had no idea what the intensity was like. In his opinion, resting when tired was a perfectly normal thing.
Now that someone had taken the lead, the rest of the group, feeling immense pressure, couldn't say anything more and could only go home.
At this point, Hulk had finally had enough fun at the amusement park. After transforming back into human form, he left Dr. Banner with only one pair of underwear.
Dr. Banner, covered in tattered clothes, pushed his way through the security doors. Looking at the calm-looking group, he was momentarily unsure whether they were in good shape or heading towards disaster: "Am I too late? Or have you done everything you could?"
"There is no problem from both a scientific and theological point of view that Superman was not infected."
Tony, relieved that it was a false alarm, turned and left: "At least we don't have to worry about what kind of catastrophic disaster a crazed Kryptonian might bring us."
After everyone went home, only Batman remained worried.
He huddled close to Joey, relentlessly pressing for answers, practically pulling Galactus back from her slumber: "Is Superman really alright?"
"Really?"
"This is no joke!"
"Will there be any unexpected problems?"
"Get out of here! He's my long-term meal ticket, who would lie about food?!"
Batman's repeated confirmations annoyed Ganata so much that she rolled around on the bed in frustration. Finally, unable to contain her anger, she picked up Joey and the bed, preparing to hide somewhere underground for some peace and quiet: "So annoying! So annoying! You're so nagging, you care about him more than his mother does!"
Even after saying that, Batman, shameless as ever, still grabbed Superman's cape, preventing Ganata from stealing her super meal ticket: "This is really important. Does Superman really not need further medical support?"
"You should know better than me. Given the environment inside his body, any virus that gets in would get slapped twice."
That makes sense.
After receiving an affirmative answer, and watching as Ganata, who was already stuffed but still insisted on taking another bite, disappeared in a streak of purple lightning, Batman, who had left Superman behind, finally nodded: "That's good."
